Electric Guitar Tabs - What is Guitar Tablature?

Electric Guitars Home > Electric Guitar Tabs

The electric guitar tabs you need to know so you can rock the show.

Electric guitar tabs are a kind of musical notation that will teach you to play music more easily. Guitar tabs tell you where to put your fingers on the strings instead of which notes to play. The full name for guitar tabs is actually guitar tablature and it is an easy method of learning even the most complex songs.

Electric guitar tabs are often used to notate pop, rock and folk music. Unlike regular musical notation which shows a musician the pitch and rhythm of a note, tabs show the strings and frets of the instrument in the form of a "picture". This picture illustrates where the fingers must be place to produce specific notes.

Electric guitar tabs are made up of horizontal lines in series. These lines form a staff (or stave). Each one symbolizes one guitar string. This means that guitar tab has a six-line staff. Different numbers are written on the lines. These numbers denote one fret. So a number 3 written on the top line of the staff means you should press down on the high E (top/thin) string not the low E at the third fret.

So how are electric guitar tabs different to standard musical notation? Tabs can make it much easier to play the guitar. Because the different notes are graphically represented it can help the player to position his fingers quicker. Guitar tabs are an excellent tool for beginner guitarists but are also used by musicians who are able to read music quite well.

Guitar music results from playing many notes at once. To play one note you need to do several actions with your fingers. Electric guitar tabs make it easier to visualize the complete picture more quickly. Standard guitar notation is written on one staff while electric guitar tabs are not. This makes playing complex chords easier.

Electric guitar tabs use numbers, letters and symbols to show the fretboard and this means that tabs can be shared electronically. The good news is that tabs are freely and widely available over the Internet. These are called 'text-tab' or ASCII tab. Of course standard printed tabs are also available.

Are there any disadvantages to using electric guitar tabs? Guitar tabs can only be read by a guitarist while standard musical notation can be played by any musician versed in a suitable instrument. Most guitar tabs also do not show the rhythm of the notes, but this is beginning to change as more complete tabs are being written. However these tabs are not available via the Internet at present.

Mastering the Fretboard using just 2 forms!
My friend Andy Koblick, the mastermind behind the Guitar5Day learning program has been working on a pretty revolutionary new course - Project X - mainly aimed at those guitar players who have plateaued ( is that a word? - ah I'm sure you know what I mean! ), and want to take their playing to another level.

He has kindly given me a video extract from this 5 DVD course for my Guitar Tips Blog subscribers.

The lesson shows how it is possible to achieve mastery of your fretboard using just two of the forms from the traditional CAGED system. Certainly food for thought, check it out at the link below:

How to hold a Barre Chord
This tip comes from Chris Elmore, the mastermind behind ElmoreMusic, who provide GuitarTips, Guitar Backing Tracks, Guitar Leads, GuitarSongs and GuitarTheory resources.

This is quite a basic tip, but for learning guitarists it is one of the early hurdles which can stop you in your tracks. Most early learners try to avoid Barre chords, and 'learn around' them - but if you want to be a Guitar Player - barre chords are something you must master

Check out the tip at this link: How to Hold a Barre Chord

14 Minute Video Guitar Chords lesson
I have been singing the praises of Dan Denleys guitar courses - AmazingGuitar, BluesGuitar, LeadGuitar and AcousticGuitar for some time now. The link to the Acoustic course has been displaying "Sold Out" for some weeks now, but it is being relaunched tomorrow, Fri 14th March at 11 a.m. Eastern time. To celebrate the relaunch, Dan has given me a POWERFUL, 14 minute free video lesson crammed with incredible info about guitar CHORDS to share with my Blog readers. In this video you'll discover:

-> How chords are related to scales...

-> Why some chords are maj, minor, dom, etc.

-> What guitarists mean when they say... "two
chord" or "five chord" etc.

-> Which chords come from the major scale

-> The difference between a triad and a 7th
chord...

...and a LOT more.

You can watch it here right now:

14 Minute Guitar Chords Lesson - From Dan Denley's AcousticGuitarSecrets course

This video shows extracts of Dan's Acoustic Guitar Secrets course,
which is fast becoming THE standard for learning acoustic guitar.
The course completely sold out when it was released back in December,
hence the unavailable message you will have seen if you clicked the
link recently.

Now, *finally* it's going to be available again, remember it's
tomorrow: Fri, Mar 14 at 11AM (eastern).

Oh - and you can also download this video and watch on your iPod.
Just look for the "iPod" link.

I own a copy of this course, and it has done more to improve my
guitar playing than anything I've tried in the past 20 years.
Seriously. I would strongly advise anyone who REALLY wants to be
a "Guitar Player" to grab a copy of the course, you won't regret
it. But get in early, I have a feeling that the "Sold Out" signs
will be back up fairly soon, also Dan is making noises about
splitting the course into 3 seperate courses, which will almost
certainly increase the cost.

Either ways, you can enjoy the free 14-minute video lesson at:

Amazing Guitar Lessons relaunch - ends today!!!
June 16th 2006 - Update

*** This promotion ends today, June 16th

If you want to take advantage of the really valuable bonus items available during the launch, and guarantee getting your copy of this great guitar lessons resource at the old price, you should click on this link: AmazingGuitarSecrets now, while the offer is still open (ends midnight tonight)

*** See below for details

Part of my mission with www.guitarsongs.info is to find other
really useful guitarist resources and pass them on to my website
and blog visitors.

Back in November, I published a post singing the praises of a great new resource - AmazingGuitarSecrets, and have had dozens of kind emails thanking me for the 'heads-up'. It is still the most complete and comprehensive guitar lessons course I have seen anywhere on the net.

So this is to let you know about an 'event' - the relaunch by Dan Denley of this great learning program with more functionality, more material and, for the duration of the launch ( June 9th to June 16th ) a really valuable and 'amazing' set of bonus items ( some of this are time-sensitive, 'earlybird' offers ). The old pricing structure is being maintained for the launch period too - with that kind of value for your buck, I would strongly advise checking it out at:

AmazingGuitarSecrets.Com while the special deal is still live.

( Note: there is a lot of copy on the promotion page, I think Dan is a fantastic guitar teacher, but is maybe over-enthusiastic as a promotor!. He has a lot of audio testimonials from happy subscribers - you might want to take these 'as read' and skip down to see what the course really can do for you - and which bonus items are still available. )

The link again is AmazingGuitarSecrets.Com
You really should check it out, but don't wait too long, event ends on June 9th.

Enjoy your music,

PJ
